2025 Next Gen: Mark Topley
Mark Topley is one of the 2025 Next Gens, as nominated by Groups Today readers for making a difference in the industry with his fresh, progressive perspective.
Mark Topley's passion for the group travel industry began at a young age, as he has many fond memories of school trips to the Philadelphia Zoo, Franklin Institute, and other attractions in Philadelphia.
"Getting out of the classroom and experiencing something new instilled in me a lifelong curiosity about life," Topley shared. "I believe that group travel has the power to change young lives for good."
Topley currently serves as the first ever Head of Tourism Sales for the New York Yankees. A 10-year NYC tourism industry professional, Topley has also held positions with Disney, Cirque du Soleil, EBG, SeatGeek and GetYourGuide.
"What intrigues me most about the industry is the vast array of businesses that are impacted by tourism," he shared. "From a waiter at a restaurant, to the actors on a Broadway stage, to the technology provider for a boat navigation system, the number of people globally that work in tourism is simply amazing."
In his work as both a buyer and supplier, Topley has learned that developing sincere personal relationships with partners is critically important. He's passionate about advocating for the power of sport to create unforgettable travel experiences. His favorite accomplishment thus far was being a part of the team that aided in the reopening of Broadway post-COVID.
"On April 3, 2021, the SeatGeek-powered St. James Theatre became the first Broadway theater to open its doors after the COVID-19 shutdown, for a NY PopsUp event featuring the comic stylings of Nathan Lane and a tap dance and musical number performed by Savion Glover," Topley recalled. "Attending that performance was a once-in-a-lifetime (hopefully) moment that I'll never forget."
Looking toward the future, Topley plans to play a pivotal role in making sports a primary driver of tourism across the world.
"My career path has been a unique one, having worked for two Broadway producers, two OTAs, a ticketing system and a major professional sports team," he said. "Throughout my career, I've learned what makes some of the most respected tourism organizations successful and have had the chance to work alongside many uniquely smart and creative NYC industry pros. Most sports organizations in the U.S. are just now dipping their toes into the tourism waters, so there is a long runway for growth for us all as a collective.
"And on a personal note, I am getting married later this year and am looking forward to forging many meaningful travel memories with my wife in the future!"
