DMO Perspectives in the Time of COVID-19
A new DMO survey conducted by the United States Tour Operators Association has offered insight into how destination marketing organizations are viewing recovery, health and safety, and more.
The survey, which saw participation from 70 DMO Associate Members around the world, indicated that one third (34%) of respondents are "unsure" or that it's "too early determine" when it comes to when their destination anticipates opening tourism to U.S. travelers. However, 20% of respondents said they are already open for U.S. travelers, and roughly 13% anticipate a July 2021 and beyond opening. Another 10% predict an April 2021 opening.
Respondents continue to report that domestic tourism will be the top priority as their destination reopens, followed by regional or neighboring countries. Short hall travel was ranked third in priority followed in fourth by long haul tourism.
When asked what group size limitations may be in place once tourism from U.S. is open, half of the respondents selected it was "too early to determine" for both coaches (52%) and gatherings (50%), showing that uncertainty regarding limitations and restrictions continue to grow.
For tourism product, respondents named FIT as the tourism product they believe will come back the soonest and strongest as their destination begins to reopen to tourism. Small groups (less than 20 passengers) were ranked second, nature/adventure in third, followed by luxury, medium groups (20-50 passengers), large groups (over 50 passengers), and river cruises. Ocean cruises was ranked to come back last.
When it comes to health and safety practices, an overwhelming 97% of DMOs say they will use their own governments' health and hygiene protocol. More than half (56%) reported that they will rely on UNWTO/WHO guidelines, while 28% noted that other health organizations guidelines will be utilized.
