Venture ‘Off the Beaten Path’ in Shipshewana and LaGrange County

The Shipshewana/LaGrange County CVB adds free audio narration option to accompany famous "Off the Beaten Path" backroads driving tour.

One of the greatest experiences groups can have visiting Shipshewana and LaGrange County, Indiana, is venturing "Off the Beaten Path!" This amazing self-guided driving tour and instructive map leads groups to over 80 barn quilts, more than 120 Amish cottage shops, and through over 100 miles of the highways, byways, backroads and side trips that make this Amish destination one of the most visited in the U.S.

And now, the beloved backroads journey has gotten even better, thanks to the addition of the brand-new "Off the Beaten Path Audio Driving Tour," containing over three hours of directions and narration to guide groups through the scenic countryside of LaGrange County. The free audio tour—available via CD, USB drive or through streaming on Spotify—is informative and fun, containing facts, history and local folklore.

The "Off the Beaten Path" journey can be taken at any time, and on any day of the week (noting that Amish shops will be closed on Sunday). Groups can go at their own pace, and stop to shop, visit or eat on their own schedule.

On the tour, groups will encounter barn quilts, Amish farms and cottage shops, roadside stands, buggies and bike riders, parks and lakes, trailheads, restaurants and attractions. They'll also meet friendly people, see glimpses of the past, view historic sites like the memorial of Chief Shipshewana, and learn unusual stories, like the legend of "the skunk lady of Howe" or how the area is tied to Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup. Groups could also visit all six small towns that make up the unusual and beautiful Heart of Amish Country, now with a wonderful accompanying narration to round out the trip.

"Shipshewana is a peaceful, safe, and charming community that is an ideal starting point for an Amish Country Adventure that is personal, flexible and fun for all," said Sonya Nash, Shipshewana/LaGrange County Executive Director. "Visitors will enjoy making the experience of 'Off the Beaten Path' their own by taking time to watch the horses, see the laundry on the line, shop the rug weavers, stop at a roadside produce stand ... all while learning the cool stories from yesteryear."

Visit the Shipshewana/Lagrange County Visitor's Center at 350 S Van Buren St. in Shipshewana Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. (closed for Memorial Day) to pick up a map and USB drive or CD. Click here to access the tour on Spotify, and go to visitshipshewana.org to see and download the map.
