See Locations from the Silver Screen in Austin

For the last several years, Austin has continued to emerge as a top tourist destination, drawing in appreciators of art, lovers of music, culinary enthusiasts and more. But did you realize? Austin is also an ideal location for movie buffs and television aficionados!

Those looking to see their favorite films come to life before their eyes won't want to miss scoping out the Austin Film Tourism Guide, curated by Visit Austin. The guide goes into detail about all the recognizable film locations groups could expect to find right in Austin, whether the scene was meant to be set in the popular Texas city or not. We've picked out a few of our favorites to give you a taste of what the destination has to offer.

DAZED AND CONFUSED

This nostalgic cult classic starring movie newcomer (at the time) Matthew McConaughey comes alive through a variety of locations throughout Austin. Get a meal at the Top Notch Hamburgers drive-in, scope out a game at the baseball field where Mitch tries to evade the seniors, grab some BBQ at Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew—just a few doors down from where The Emporium scenes were filmed at Violet Crown Plaza—and more.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

The NBC Universal television show which ran from 2006 through 2011 was adapted from H.G. Bissinger's book, which was also the basis for the film of the same name. Sports fans will enjoy revisiting the locations seen in the series where the players and their families lived their lives, such as Panther's Field (Kuempel Stadium), the scene of a Crucifictorius concert (Broken Spoke) and the Alamo Freeze (Dairy Queen on Manor Road).

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

Horror fans, rejoice! The 1974 classic film about a group of five friends trying to evade the grasp of Leatherface and a family of cannibalistic psychopaths boasts filming locations all around the city—the cemetery from the opening scene and the creepy gas station (now known as We Slaughter Barbeque), to name a couple.
