Scenic Hideaways and Cultural Attractions in Jefferson Parish
In Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, groups will find a diverse community that offers a variety of attractions, activities, cuisine and experiences.
As a New Orleans neighbor, Jefferson Parish spans more than 400 miles from Lake Pontchartrain to the fishing community of Grand Isle on the Gulf of Mexico. Come along as we explore some itinerary suggestions groups are sure to love!
Start your day by traveling from a hotel in Metairie across the Mississippi River, to the west bank of the Parish to experience a swamp and bayou adventure in Lafitte! And while the travel distance from Metairie to Lafitte is only approximately 50 minutes (or 35 miles), it truly feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle!
Upon arrival, groups could experience a thrilling ride aboard an airboat, slowing down along the way to take in the beautiful immersive landscape and wildlife found around every corner! This experience is an ideal way to discover both the beauty and relevance that these wetlands mean to the region and nation.
From there, enjoy lunch at Restaurant des Familles, which is nestled along Bayou des Familles and offers a unique dining experience groups can only get in southeast Louisiana. And, for an added treat, local gators often stop by for a visit and are visible from the wall of windows overlooking the bayou! Later that evening, groups could return to Metairie for dinner at Drago's, "home of the original charbroiled oyster."
The next day, groups could plan a trip back in time as they visit the historic district of Gretna, also located across the Mississippi River (approximately 20 minutes and 10 miles from Metairie). Several museums can be found in Gretna, which make for a wonderful way to spend an afternoon: The Kitte Stehle House, the nation's oldest volunteer fire company, the David Crockett Firehouse (home of the Louisiana State Fire Museum), the Gretna Green Blacksmith Shop, the "red caboose," home of the Southern Pacific Freight Depot & the Illinois Central Caboose Museum, and the German American Cultural Center.
In addition to these notable stops, the tree lined avenue, quaint homes with the beloved New Orleans style architecture, and fabulous view of the City of New Orleans across the Mighty Mississippi River make for a memorable experience. Cap the day off with a stop for lunch at Gattuso's Restaurant and/or a stop at That's Amore Bakery, which offers fabulously decadent desserts!
