Four Scenic Destinations for Railway Enthusiasts

For some, there’s nothing like stepping aboard a train and feeling the simultaneous thrill, wonder, and nostalgia the experience offers. Thankfully, there are plenty of opportunities around the country for groups seeking this type of historic and exciting adventure. Keep reading, as we’ve gathered up some top scenic choices sure to please railway enthusiasts of all kinds!

MANITOU SPRINGS, COLORADO

Located only six miles west of Colorado Springs in the Pikes Peak Region in Manitou Springs, the Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway is a journey not to be missed by and train or railway lover. The 1 hour and 10 minute-ride to reach the summit ascends 8.9 miles to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak and is the world's highest and longest cog railroad! Th ride offers stunning panoramic views of various environments, while riders hear the stories of those historical points and significant people along the way. Just remember to drink plenty of water!

BLUE RIDGE, GEORGIA

Hop aboard the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway at its historic depot in Blue Ridge, Georgia for a four-hour, 26-mile roundtrip journey that takes groups along the Toccoa River through the North Georgia countryside. Along with relaxing river views and forest canopy cover, groups can enjoy stopping off for a two-hour layover to do some shopping in the quaint southern sister towns of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee. Groups even have choice of vintage, climate-controlled or open-air rail cars for their ride. 

ALASKA

With Alaska Railroad, groups have a bounty of natural beauty to take in, along with several year-round routes and trains to choose from. Whether groups opt for the Coastal Classic Train (perfect for day trips from Anchorage to Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park), the Denali Star Train (which, on a clear day, offers groups incredible views of the train’s namesake and tallest mountain in North America), or another one of the railroad’s options, they’re sure to get an unparalleled look at the best of Alaska’s scenery.

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN

In Ashwaubenon outside of Green Bay, the National Railroad Museum is a must for any railroad or train enthusiast. Established in 1956, the museum is one of the largest, oldest, and most respected in the country, offering visitors an abundance of immersive exhibits, historic train cars, and more. In addition, the museum also offers short seasonal train rides along the Fox River shoreline and other parts of the museum property!
