New Glass Now | Open May 12, 2019 – January 5, 2020
New Glass Now will document the innovation and dexterity of artists, designers, and architects working in the challenging material of glass. A global survey designed to the show the breadth and depth of contemporary glassmaking, the exhibition will feature objects, installations, videos, and performances made in the past three years by 100 artists of 32 nationalities.
The works included in New Glass Now were selected from some 1,400 submissions from 52 countries, by a panel comprising Susie J. Silbert, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Glass at CMoG, and three guest curators: Aric Chen, curator at large M+ museum, Hong Kong; Susanne Joker Johnsen, artist and head of exhibitions at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation, Denmark; and American artist Beth Lipman.
Blown Away: Glassblowing Comes to Netflix | Opened May 23, 2019
Blown Away, the first-ever TV competition series featuring the art of glassblowing, is poised to reach millions worldwide via Netflix. The show, which launches this summer, follows a group of 10 highly skilled glassmakers from North America who fabricate beautiful works of art that are assessed by a panel of expert judges. The Corning Museum of Glass was involved from concept to reality.
Located in the Amphitheater Hot Shop, the Blown Away display—which opened May 23, 2019—tells the story of how the museum found its way into the global spotlight. Watch a behind-the-scenes documentary with interviews conducted on the set and footage captured of the museum's Hot Glass Demo Team taking part in the finale. Journey To The Moon: How Glass Got Us There | Opens June 29, 2019
Timed to complement the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing, the museum will present a special display highlighting the ways in which glass has provided not only a lens but also a vehicle to make possible the journey to the moon. Located in the Innovation Center, the display invites visitors to get hands-on and explore the integral role glass has played in space exploration.
A highlight of the display will be a lunar meteorite with glassy components that visitors will be able to touch. Key objects and artifacts examine the role of glass in making this mission possible, including fiberglass—used in the protective outer layer of spacesuits worn by astronauts and insulation for the spacecrafts—and a Gemini window, designed by Corning, Inc. for the space shuttle windshield. A moonwalk montage will provide visuals of the lunar landing, revealing how glass on our TV screens gave everyone on Earth a first glimpse at the moon, and that glass in our TVs and devices still provide us a window through which to view important moments today.
